There is a great deal to see and do in China from visiting age-old temples to bar-hopping. China’s sizzling cities, ancient customs and fascinating history offers much to the most intrepid explorer.
The Chinese academic school year beings in late August or early September. The first semester ends a couple of weeks prior to the Chinese New Year, which changes each year. The second semester generally begins 2 weeks after the New Year and continues until June or July, depending on the school.
Various teaching contract durations are available in China:

1 semester/5 months beginning in February
- 2 semesters/10 months beginning in February (including a 2-month summer break)
- 1 semester/5 months beginning in August
- 2 semesters/10 months beginning in August (Chinese academic year)

“Z” visa. This working visa is tied to the educational institution specifically.
For the full duration of your stay, housing is provided free of charge by the host educational institution
- Airport transfer, transfer to school campus after orientation
- Arrival orientation in Shanghai for one week. Orientation hosted by our partner organization-CIEE. The orientation provides vital information; TEFL theory and practice/teaching methodologies, cultural information, language classes and the opportunity to meet other teachers on the program
- Receive salary of 3,000RMB (approximately $425CDN) per month by the educational institution
- Sightseeing trips and excursions provided
- The return portion of your airfare from Shanghai will be reimbursed by the educational host institution upon successful completion of a full academic year or a two semester contract
- CIEE Shanghai provides 24-hour in-country emergency support
- Electronic Welcome Pack and Final Kit to assist with trip preparation
- CIEE Handbook with useful cultural and tourist information, teaching advice and local resources

Take your Registration Pack and the documents outlined below to your nearest Travel CUTS/Voyages Campus, Adventure Travel Company or Odyssey Travel office. Our travel counsellors are there to process your registration and contact SWAP to arrange your phone interview |

SWAP Registration Checklists
Include the following documents as part of your registration.
- SWAP Teach in China Registration Pack
- Personal Statement Essay
- Resume
- Two typed letters of recommendation from a past employer or teacher (keep the originals for your records)
- Copies of all Diplomas and Certificates relevant to your education and training
- Photocopy of passport photo page
- 2 passport photos (You will require 2 more – one for your visa application and one for your medical exam form, please retain these)
- $500 Deposit on the Registration Fee
- Language Evaluation Form found HERE - complete this form only if English is not your first language
