Do I have to be fluent in German to go on SWAP Austria? No, it is not a requirement to speak German, but it certainly will help in your daily life. Please be aware that your job options will be more limited. (also see next question).

What type of jobs are available if my German is pretty basic (or less..)? Participants with limited (or none) German skills often find work in teaching English, tutoring English, working with children as a caregiver or in summer camps (in English), some in the tourism industry working with English speaking tourists (e.g. ski instructor, tour guide, etc) or in Irish Pubs.

Positions in teaching French are available occasionally, but usually not as many as for teaching English.

Do I need qualifications or work experience to teach English in Austria? While a certification or previous experience in teaching English will be a definite advantage or even a requirement to work in many of the language schools, most places offering tutoring or childcare will just be happy to have an English native speaker on site. (Experience working with children will be an advantage).

Can I extend my visa or switch to a different visa once I'm in Austria and want to stay longer? * Absolutely not! There is no way to extend your visa, from inside or outside of Austria. As immigration laws are rather limiting, don't count on switching to a different visa, unless your employer is willing to go through a lengthy application process and is offering you an extremely good position. (no entry level positions!).

When does the visa start? The visa starts on the date requested in your application, your insurance dates have to match the visa dates.
