FAQ - SWAP Teach in China
Does a College degree or TESOL Training qualify me for the SWAP Teach in China program?
Our partners, CIEE, who will be placing you, deal with Chinese schools who have very specific standards for their foreign teachers. They stipulate that participants have at least a University BA, in order to be accepted on the program. TESOL training, though an asset, is not sufficient on it's own for acceptance onto the program.

Do I need to know Mandarin?
Though not a requirement, if you have not had any exposure to the language, a basic beginner course is highly recommended. Even basic Mandarin will help you negotiate the culture, as well as help you to connect to your students.

Do I need to have my Diploma?
Your diploma is absolutely necessary. We will be required to provide a copy of it to your School once you are placed. Other documents such as your transcripts or a letter from your school will not be sufficient. If you have just graduated and have not received your diploma, you must get a copy before you can apply for the program. Likewise, if you have misplaced, or no longer have a copy, please replace it before applying.

What kind of class load can I expect?
The typical foreign teacher class load is 16 teaching hours per week. This may be up to twice as many as a Chinese teacher, but it's important to remember that you will be both making a better salary and have better accommodation. Also be aware that you will also be required to devote time to class preparation and be asked by your school to attend staff meetings, assemblies and other school events. The majority of teachers are also invited by their students to “English Corner”, an informal weekly meeting to allow people to practise their English. Therefore 16 hours in classes will add up to more than a 16-hour workweek!

What can I expect to make? The minimum local salary is 3,000 RMB per month (approximately $440 Canadian). This will vary from school to school. Because you will not be expected to pay rent or bills, your salary will be enough to cover your daily living expenses and leave enough to explore China on weekends, holidays and when your contract is finished. Obviously, how much or how little you have left over for travel depends on your personal spending habits and will vary greatly.
