SWAPPER Testimonials

"Before I return back to school I wanted to experience a new culture, learn a new language and live in a foreign city – SWAP made all of that possible."
Louis Couturier, SWAP Germany

“Use the SWAP exchange and try and get in contact with other SWAPPPERs as soon as possible as they can be huge assets in finding accommodation and jobs. I worked as an English teacher (18 Euros/hr) and it only took me 4 days to find work!"
Stacey McPeek, SWAP Austria

"Take advantage of the resources that SWAP provides and the advice of the people there to help you and once you're over there, try to integrate yourself fully into the way of life and the culture.  At first, everything will be strange and new but soon enough, you'll be comfortable and feel just like a local.  When people stop you to ask for directions for something, you'll know it's happened. "
Colin Taillefer, SWAP France

“For your job search, July is not a good time to show up, especially if you're only staying a few months. A lot of the jobs I saw advertised began in September. Be flexible about what kind of work you're willing to do.”
Eveline Caron , SWAP France

"SWAP France is not for the faint of heart. The language, culture, and administration can be difficult, even for francophones whom I've met along the way. My tips for future SWAPPERs would be to handle all the administrative work before you leave Canada (especially the medical and civil responsibility insurance). Bring lots of money and credit cards. Hit the tarmac running once you arrive in order to look for a job. Don't go sightseeing for a week first. The people who did that first did not survive one month into the trip. Remember the unemployment rate is approximately 10% for Paris and higher elsewhere. Save the vacationing for later. Despite all those caveats coming to France has been one of the best experiences of my life!
- Daniel Lucaci, SWAP France

"I went to Paris through SWAP France and loved it. In less than two weeks, I found an apartment and a job right in the Quartier Latin. Paris is great but a girl needs some sun! So, during my time off from work, I travelled to other parts of France. I visited Marseille, Nice and the beautiful island of Corsica which was truly a paradise. I had a blast touring other parts of the country but the funny part is that, while travelling, I missed Paris. In the few short months that I lived and worked there, Paris had quickly become home sweet home to me.
Participating on SWAP has definitely been the best experience I’ve had so far. At first, the idea of living and working overseas was a bit stressful but once I arrived at the hosting centre in Paris, I felt an immediate sense of relief. It's amazing how helpful and friendly the staff were. They were there to help me and other participants with absolutely everything — from finding a job and an apartment to organizing social activities to assisting with any kind of difficulty that may be encountered along the way. It was very comforting to know I had this kind of support throughout my entire working holiday.
I had the time of my life in France! I learned quickly that with SWAP, it’s not just about the work experience but everything that surrounds it. Thanks SWAP!"
Julie Dilli, SWAP France

"My experience was wonderful and life altering - especially since it was a traineeship. This program helped shape my post-graduate life (a difficult transition for most) by assisting me in achieving one of my dreams. I also was able to network with some of the finest in my field and this experience allowed me to live in a world-class city. I have SWAP to thank for helping make it all happen."
Sophia Reynoso, SWAP USA Internship and PCT

"It's a great idea to send some e-mails out to businesses before heading to your destination because by the time I had arrived, I had many responses offering various types of work. I attended a few interviews until I found the job I wanted that I knew would lead to an enjoyable summer. Overall, I was working within the first two weeks.
My favourite place would probably be Volcano National Park on the Big Island (Hawaii). It was the most astonishing and breathtaking experience of my life."
Dan Quai, SWAP USA Summer

“I registered for SWAP USA for the summer of 2005 because I wanted to expand my horizons and experience life in America. At first I was sceptical, scared and unsure of what to do in a new country all by myself. Now that the program is almost over, it was one of the best decisions of my life. I've learned so much and acquired so many skills and great referrals from employers. In fact, I've done so well in the program that my employer wants me to come back next summer. I would like to thank SWAP for taking care of the paperwork and making the process so smooth, it was definitely the right choice with well-deserved rewards. I'm glad I choose SWAP”
Lori Kwok, SWAP USA Summer

"SWAP USA gave me the opportunity to visit my American friends and spend a summer in Washington, D.C. Without a language barrier, Canadians don't have a problem fitting in as locals. Finding casual work was fairly simple. I managed to find two jobs, one initially at a bookstore and then another as a waiter where the tips were great.
I have fond memories of riding my bike home at night, passing by Capitol Hill and having a spectacular view of Washington Mall and the glittering monuments. Note for travellers on a budget: admission to all Smithsonian museums is FREE! If you find yourself in D.C., Ben’s Chili Bowl is a must and also check out the hopping local music scene.
While living abroad, one of my most rewarding experiences was volunteering with Sunday Suppers, a mobile soup kitchen that provides hot meals and clothing to people in need every Sunday night in Washington. I not only made some cool friends but also learned how difficult it can be for the poor and marginalized in D.C.
Going on SWAP is all about making the most of your time abroad. Kudos to SWAP for making the registration process a piece of cake. And yes, it is possible to make ends meet and have lots of fun. If you put in a strong effort, it will be really rewarding. I am happy to say this was the case for me — and it can be for
you too! "
Daniel Yang , SWAP USA Summer

"It was the most amazing three months of my life. Being in San Francisco by myself really forced me to grow up and learn a lot about myself."
Paul Boyadjian , SWAP USA Summer

"A real solid experience that will look extremely good on a resume down the road. The people are so interested and curious to hear stories from you; it is just “awesome”."
Colin O’Regan , SWAP USA Summer

"I enjoyed the nightlife (go to LEX, Feria, ALife, AGEHA etc..), shopping, and hiking trips the most. Hiking trails can be found anywhere outside of Tokyo. Japan was all one big highlight! I can't even pinpoint one defining moment...it was incredible from beginning to end! "
Stefaine Zaarur, SWAP Japan

“The Japanese say “ganbatte” or be strong and live life. Ganbatte has become my motto for living and working abroad. I remember learning about Japan in a social studies class in the seventh grade and have been fascinated by the culture and history ever since. Now, years later and as a recent university grad, I find myself working and living in Japan.
The only way I was able to accomplish this goal was by applying to the SWAP program. I worked at a cultural centre as an English and French teacher. I really enjoy my job and I got to spend my weekends and holidays travelling.
As an avid outdoors person, I consider myself fortunate to live and work in Takayama, a small city in the Japanese Alps. Here, in "little Kyoto", I'm able to get my fix of hiking, camping and skiing. My favourite experiences include hiking up Mount Aso and through the Takachiho gorge in Kyushu; eating champon in Nagasaki; visiting the peace park in Hiroshima; attending many exciting and beautiful festivals in Takachiho, Furukawa and Asahi; strolling through the Gion District of Kyoto and building relationships with my students and friends.
I love my life in Japan and am enjoying every minute of it. All this because I joined SWAP! So I challenge you to walk on the wild side and join SWAP. Ganbatte!”
Meaghen Reid, SWAP Japan

"Difficult, yet rewarding. Living in Japan isn't all parties, but it's great as I got to see a different way of looking at things and realized what the ‘Western World' is. It has focused me on what I want out of life, rather than work, work, work!"
Blair Meadows, SWAP Japan

"I thought the SWAP experience was unbelievable. I learned a lot and had a great time. I was a little unsure of what to expect when I arrived in Japan, but it was great. I would recommend this programme to anyone interested in traveling to any country."
Lisa Robillard, SWAP Japan

"I had always planned on going on an extended overseas jaunt once I'd finished school. I had also always planned on working while I was away - I like the idea of being able to stay for a longer time in a city of my choice, as a resident getting to know the people and the environment of a foreign city and culture rather than as a passing traveller. The SA program was, in my opinion, the farthest away and most exotic choice SWAP offered and, in the end, SWAP's services helping to get a working visa in the country sold me on their program. I wanted to go to Africa anyway and to work there seemed like a pretty rare and exciting opportunity so I signed up with SWAP and I chose the SA program."
Cailen Elliot, SWAP Work South Africa

"I chose SWAP because it provided a great opportunity to travel with like-minded individuals and to learn about another country and culture.  We volunteered in a primary school and assisted with resource development and utilization.  We also worked with a group that taught children phys ed – it was great! A llow yourself to be immersed in the culture- take drum lessons, get to know the people and initiate your own experience – it will make the experience even better! "
Shannon Williams, SWAP Volunteer South Africa

"I loved being in school with the students. My favourite activities was the one week safari we did after we were done with our volunteering project and the wildlife excursion we did in Namibia that was organized by SASTS, the SWAP African partner. You have to hike Table Mountain, try surfing, and check out township's tours and wine tasting around Stellenbosh. "
Maude St-Pierre, SWAP Volunteer South Africa

"Going on SWAP Volunteer South Africa Wildlife program was cheaper than going on a one-week safari and a lot better! It was really hands-on – I got to work directly with exotic animals like the Wildebeest! It was an amazing opportunity! "
Cass Meehan, SWAP Volunteer South Africa

“Out of all the companies I looked into SWAP offered the most flexible opportunities at the lowest prices, while at the same time, providing a reliable conection to someone in Canada to help with the planning (ie.expenses, flight, preparation).”
Amber Sperling, SWAP Volunteer South Africa

“I chose SWAP because it is a Canadian company and it was easy to deal with! Everything was clear, comfortable and organized!”
Kayleen Binga, SWAP Volunteer South Africa
